Spring 1970 – A new Vicarage ‘ We had to act quickly because the Saltdean Estate Company were developing the last of the land suitable for a vicarage’.
27 June 1970 - Summer Fete opened by Miss Jane Marden
6 December 1970 - Consecration of the Parish Church of St Nicholas Saltdean by the Lord Bishop of Lewes (Rt Rev James Morrell). Consecration of the Garden of Rest and Church Grounds, the Sanctuary. The Rev Derek Tansill was missing from the service as he was recovering from an operation. The Bishop tapped the entrance door three times. The Archdeacon of Lewes (The Ven David Booth) presented the Bishop with a petition for the consecration, and the keys of the building.
Plans for St Nicholas Church started in January 1959. In 1948 the building was estimated at £9,000 but by its opening it jumped to £40,000 of which £25,00 had been raised including £5,00 grant from the diocese. The debt totalling £43,000 was cleared in 1969, acknowledged great help of St Margarets.
June 1972 - First Curate Rev Frank Millar
June 1972 - 25th Midsummer Fete raised £600. 200 copies of St Nicholas Cook Book 25p each complied by Saltdean housewives & husbands. Mrs N Hinchly, Mrs De Beavis, and Mrs T Mitchell were responsible for the book.
15 October 1973 – Rev Derek Tansill presented with a book of 600 signatures of parishioners on his leaving Saltdean, he left to become Vicar of Billingshurst.
19 January 1974 - Rev Roy Goodchild, Rector of Birdham and Itchenor for six years. Inducted by the Bishop of Lewes.
4 to 6 June 1977 - Flower Festival ‘King of Kings’ in Celebration of the Queens Silver Jubilee.
13 July 1978 – Free Church Minister Induction. The Induction Service was for the Rev Robert Boulter, the new joint pastor of St Martins and Telscombe Cliffs United Reform Churches by Southern Province URC Moderator the Rev Cyril Franks. St Nicholas was loaned for the occasion by the Rev Goodchild so that both congregations could be accommodated.
